michele aweeky’s website critique

this is a link to fine films, the website of Sean and Andrea Fine, investigative journalists who turn their reporting into award-winning documentaries. they focus their work on stories involving human rights and underdeveloped societies, which is what i’d like to eventually specialize my career in. the website is attractive and clean and very easy to navigate. it holds a lot of information without overwhelming the audience because of the way it’s organized.

michele aweeky — magazine spread

leave a comment »

Here’s my layout, a week early, because I thought it was due today and worked on it for hours yesterday to get it done before I realized the due date was the 13th. Oh well.

The magazine cover I made was for a travel magazine, which I would not have picked if I had known we’d need all of our own photos for our magazine spread. So, I tried to make it work. I took a bunch of pictures over the weekend of my friends making S’mores in my friend’s backyard and turned it into ‘The Camping Chronicles’. I thought that subject was pretty fitting for a travel magazine.

I’ve used InDesign a lot in the past, so I didn’t think I’d have a lot of trouble doing this. Though working with the program wasn’t difficult, absolute creative freedom really gave me trouble. I found that being given a few requirements and told ‘go’ can be a lot harder than you’d think it’d be. But once I had a rough draft of where I wanted things to be, I think it fell into place nicely.

I tried using colors that went well together but also didn’t distract too much from the photos, because ultimately that is what you want your readers focusing on.

michele aweeky — mag cover

This is my magazine, Discover. I chose to make a travel magazine cover because I think that the pictures on travel magazines are always very striking and draw in consumers’ attention. I chose this particular pictures because I thought that the open sky gave me a good opportunity to put in large text for the title, and it was also a good color to contrast with the blue in the picture. This is not my own picture, but I did get permission from the person who owns the copyright to use it.

michele aweeky magazine cover

this is my favorite magazine cover. as soon as I heard the assignment, this image popped into my head. the photograph is so strong and it draws the reader in. though the text around the picture is really minimal, i think the design of the cover is very strong. the small amount of text does not take away from the picture at all, and keeps the cover balanced.

my cover will be for a travel magazine called ‘ destination’.

curling infographic — michele aweeky

I like this infographic because, first of all, it tries to explain exactly what Curling, the Olympic sport, is. I think that’s very ambitious. Anyway, I think that there is a lot of information in this infographic, and I think that it’s layed out neatly and creatively enough that it doesn’t overwhelm its audience. It’s also, obviously, targeted toward people who do not understand the sport, and I think that is clear by the general language being used on the graphic. I also like that it sticks to a very strict color scheme, as not to distract the reader from the purpose of the graphic. I just think it’s a very clean, clear, and well done graphic that really takes its audience into consideration, all while look attractive and well planned.

photo package: a week in the life of michele aweeky

There was a sewage leak in my apartment over winter break, and we had a huge flood. Two of my roommates were living in our living room while our place underwent construction. This is all of their stuff.

This is a shot of my kitchen with all of the floors ripped up, exposing the cement.

When our kitchen was back to normal, the first thing my roommates and I did was cook.

Two of my roommates do something called "The Cup Dance". It's impossible to explain, but this is their hands, mid-dance.

On February 1st, my roommate, Rachel, turned 20. This is her blowing out her candles.

I intern for Jazz Inside Magazine, and when I'm not at the office, they pay me to do social networking for them. I mostly manage and update their twitter and facebook accounts.

When I go into the office for my internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I take the Regional Rail to Glenside.

My friends, Lucas and Kyle, are aspiring musicians, so a few of my friends and I went to see them play at World Cafe Live.

After the show, we helped Lucas and Kyle out by selling merch for them. Here's a picture of the table.

On Tuesday night, LOST permiered it's 6th & final season. We watched it in my friend Ben's apartment, and he has an awesome view of the Philly skyline.

My name is Michele Aweeky. I’m a sophomore majoring in Magazine Journalism and completing a Certificate of Writing. This semester I’m going to be interning for Jazz Improv Magazine/Jazz Inside NY Magazine, which is a monthly and quarterly magazine focused on Jazz Music in the New York area.

I’m the president of Temple’s chapter of Invisible Children, which is a national non-profit focused on helping child soldiers in North-Eastern Africa. Forgive the plug, but we’re a brand new organization this semester, so if you’re interested let me know! I’m also head of layout design for Hyphen, Temple’s undergrad Lit & Art Magazine.

After college, I hope to go to grad school at some point and specialize in international and investigative journalism. I eventually want to break into making documentaries and writing biographies. My main interest is in underdeveloped countries and their people. I really just travel the world and write about what I see.
