Derek Forney Website Critique

I choose a photographer’s site for this assignment-¬†http://www.martinlawrencephotography.com/.

This site is full of good things. It was examples of his work on the front page. There are also a lot of links to other sections of the site that make finding what you want easy. Because this site is also for people who want to improve their photography there are various links to that information. One thing I thought was good was the event section because it allows people that are interested to find out where and when he will be places. The one main problem I have with the site is the number of links and how many stages down you have to go to find something again. The site has a lot of depth, but then things are harder to find than if there were less sub-divisions. Overall, a nice site that does a good job exhibiting work.

PVU Magazine Cover- Derek Forney

The basic idea of this magazine is to educate college vaulters and other vault enthusiasts. The message the cover tries to portray is to give helpful information about vaulters, the equipment and different training issues. I used this photograph for the cover because I wanted to show success and have that carry over to the readers (make them envision themselves in the same position).

Magazine Cover- Derek Forney

The reason I like this magazine cover is because its simple. I hate when magazine covers are completely busy with different teasers about stories inside. This cover, like many time covers, focuses on one main story and has very few story teasers, in this case 3. Another aspect I like is the simple color scheme. Red attracts the eye and the black and white gives a nice tough as well. The image and the titles are center which is also visually appealing.

Haiti Infographic- Derek Forney

leave a comment »

I really like this Infographic about Haiti for several reasons. First, the map shows the places the earthquake and aftershocks hit in red, based on magnitude. This gives a great visual representation. Second, the rest of the infographic deals with the population. It effectively shows how the different segments of the population were effected as well as a visual representation of them using blocks. The use of red against the grayish background creates a lot of contrast while the rest of the project has great alignment. Although many of the numbers shown on this chart are hard to visualize, the images used make them easy to understand.
