“It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up magazine.”

My favorite magazine cover would have to be the one featured below:

Jay-Z on the cover of XXL

I’d think my reasoning behind this magazine cover being my favorite would be obvious. However, I realize that people tend to have differing opinions, so I’ll take the time to elaboarte.

For starters, I think that Jay-Z is the [undisputed] best rapper alive. He is on the cover. That’s one plus. More so, they clearly banked on Jay-Z being able to sale this magazine on his own. That’s apparent because there aren’t any subtitles on this cover. I’m all for that.

As far as elements of design are concerned, I think it’s a great use of white (in this case, black) space. His face is the main focus of the cover and the reflection of NYC in his glasses keeps the picture from being a bland, face shot. It’s also creative and very much relevant to what Jay-Z stands represents (literally and figuratively). In addition, there aren’t a bunch of different fonts and colors used on the cover that take away from the power of the image.

I located the cover online –> here.
